Jackson 5: Behind The Hits

Today, a song that was written for someone else to sing.
I Want You Back was written by the Motown writing team called the Corporation. Originally titled I Want Be Free, it was intended for Gladys Knight & The Pips and at one point was going to be recorded by Diana Ross. Berry Gordy changed the title and some of the lyrics and make it more of a love song, suitable for his newly-signed group.
It was the first single released by Motown for the Jackson 5. With Berry Gordy going out his way to make the group successful, he invested a lot of time and money on it’s production and release, making it one of the most expensive singles recorded at that time.
